Over two and a half decades since its publication, A Deepness in the Sky stands as one of the great works of science fiction literature, as well as one of my all-time favorite audiobooks. Weaving together multiple ideas, each of which are imaginative enough to be the focus point of a dedicated novel, late author Vernor Vinge crafts a masterful narrative spanning light years and millennia.
The Mercy of Gods is an extremely promising first entry in a new sci fi series by writing duo James S.A. Corey. The novel continues Corey’s style of high-concept science fiction, though unlike the early novels of The Expanse series, The Mercy of Gods is less grounded in near future hard sci fi.
In a decade sci fi television is slop from tired and worn out IPs, Severance stands out as a reminder of the fading golden age of television. It is sci fi at its best, posing moral and ethical questions and exploring the human condition in a world shaped by speculative technologies.
Wind and Truth brings the first arc of the Stormlight Archives series to an end, marking the halfway point of the overall planned series. Though I certainly enjoyed this audiobook, much of the excitement and driving action of the previous novels has fizzled out.
Exodus: The Archimedes Engine is an engaging and intriguing entrypoint into a new sci-fi universe authored by Peter F. Hamilton. The novel is intended as backdrop and worldbuilding for the unreleased video game Exodus. This novel and audiobook delivers as a stand-alone work of science fiction, and has me excited about this emerging franchise.
The Sunlit Man is a succinct, bite-sized story from prolific fantasy author Brandon Sanderson. Set in his Cosmere universe, this short (by Sanderson standards) novel is a fun romp and an entertaining listen. Worth the Audible credit if you’re a fan of the author, otherwise hang on to it for better value.
